Why do I do it? And Why Should you do it?
There is increasing empirical evidence of the benefits to singing, and particularly singing in a group.
According to Professor Graham Welch, chair of music education at the IOE, "singing is one of the most positive forms of human activity, supporting physical, mental and social health, as well as individual development in many areas."
Singing has been found to improve people's lives in many ways:
- exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, increases the oxygenation of the blood, and improves overall alertness
- helps people manage pain and reduce the symptoms of chronic health conditions
- improves the immune system
- is linked to longevity, stress reduction and general health maintenance
- is good for the brain as it involves both music and language
- triggers the release of “happy” hormones such as oxytocin
- allows us to experience key emotions that are central to the human condition, such as joy and sadness
- provides an outlet for our feelings and enables us to feel better about ourselves and the world around us
- raises self-esteem
- can lead to better intra-personal and inter-personal communication
- may lead to developing emphatic relationships with those around us, especially if singing is used in a group context, such as a choir, where there is a positive group identity and an increased sense of community
